The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) at Utah State University (USU) has a 50 year legacy of successfully designing, building, and deploying into space leading edge infra-red instruments. These instruments typically contain optical components that must be maintained at cryogenic temperatures. Extensive thermal management research carried out by faculty and students in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), in cooperation with SDL engineers, has lead to ever more sophisticated and longer SDL program missions.

Recognizing that the results of this space oriented research could also find terrestrial application with significant commercial potential, a Center of Excellence in Thermal Management Technologies (TMT) was designated at USU by the State Office of Economic Development in 2006. Now a recognized Division of the Space Dynamics Laboratory, TMT is devoted to providing expertise and developing commercial products based on both a vast thermal management heritage and on-going cutting edge research.
